A Little About Me

I am a 6th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher and have been for the last 8 years.  Before this, I taught 3rd grade for 2 years and 4th grade for 9 years. I have a wonderful husband, a 22 year-old daughter and a 21 year-old stepson.

I started this journey about 6 years ago when I realized that I was not as "progressive" in my thinking as I had always thought I was.

Around this time, a colleague had asked me to join her in working to earn a Global Educator Digital Badge, (GEDB), which, at the time, was a very new idea.  I honestly hadn't put much thought into it even though I agreed to do it. In order to apply for the GEDB, I had to come up with a topic for a Capstone Project and my project became "Making the World a Better Place: A Study in Compassion and Understanding Near and Far."  With a newfound interest and desire to become a more insightful and compassionate person, I started seeking out every opportunity I could find to help me become the person I wanted to be.

After a couple of years, I achieved the goal that, to me, had become a side note to the important things I had learned along the way.  I learned what equity truly means and how the lack of it affects people of color, people with disabilities, people who identify as LGBTQ, and people whose circumstances have forced them to live in poverty.
